The new film follows Jack Ryan, played by John Krasinski, and continues the story from the Prime series. He reunites with CIA operatives to navigate a treacherous web of betrayal against an enemy who knows their every move, facing a past they thought was long put to rest. The film also brings back fellow cast member Wendell Pierce (Superman) and brings in Sienna Miller (American Sniper) as an MI6 agent to work alongside Ryan in London.
The film begins with Jack no longer working for the CIA, having stepped away from the world of espionage to pursue a quieter life on Wall Street. However, his peaceful routine is interrupted when James Greer, played by Pierce, reaches out to him. Jack Ryan: Ghost War is a fantastic watch, and one of the best aspects is the chemistry between Pierce and Krasinski. Their relationship is one of the strongest elements of the film, and it really helps ground the story alongside all the action and espionage.
The film also does a great job of not relying too heavily on previous knowledge, meaning newcomers can still jump in and enjoy it without needing to know loads of backstory beforehand. The action sequences, especially those set in London, are incredibly well done and give the film a cinematic scale throughout.
The direction from Andrew Bernstein is fantastic, with consistently strong visuals throughout. Bernstien does a great job with tension in this movie as well, shooting the action well in a tight way. Krasinski also delivers a brilliant performance, and if we don’t see him return in this role again, it would be a massive shame, as he understands the role so much. It’s no wonder talk has already turned to other film entries with the character in the future.
The score is also excellent, delivering tense espionage themes that elevate both the action scenes and the quieter, more emotional moments. Alongside Krasinski and Pierce, Miller gives a fantastic performance as an MI6 agent, while Michael Kelly is really good in the role of Mike November, bringing charisma and humour in moments of high tension.
Overall, this film is a great watch. I feel like it’s going to do really well on streaming, and I hope we continue to see more films and TV series based around the Jack Ryan character and other books from Tom Clancy as well. Check it out when it hits streaming; there is something here for new and old fans alike.
