Veteran righty Vince Velasquez elected free agency after being outrighted by the Cubs, according to the MLB.com transaction tracker. Chicago designated him for assignment on Sunday and quickly ran him through waivers.
Velasquez has had a couple brief stints on the big league roster. He has made one long relief appearance in each, combining for 3 1/3 scoreless frames. Velasquez has otherwise spent the season in a swing role with Triple-A Iowa, where he has a 6.15 ERA across 33 2/3 innings. He fanned 26% of batters faced but issued walks to a concerning 16.2% of opposing hitters.
This is the second time Velasquez has elected free agency after being outrighted by the Cubs. He quickly re-signed last time on a minor league contract. That’ll probably be the case again. This is Velasquez’s first season with some MLB action in three years.
