Kane Williamson’s retirement from international cricket has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the cricketing world, but one of the most touching messages came from Indian superstar Virat Kohli. The former India captain took to social media to salute Williamson’s remarkable career and reflect on how a rivalry that began in youth cricket gradually evolved into a lasting friendship.

Virat Kohli shares heartfelt message for Kane Williamson

Soon after Williamson confirmed the end of his international journey, Kohli posted an emotional note acknowledging the New Zealand legend’s immense contribution to the game. The Indian batter described Williamson as more than just an opponent, emphasizing the bond they had built over years of competing on the biggest stages.

Kohli wrote that while facing Williamson had always been a privilege, he treasured their conversations and shared understanding of cricket even more. Congratulating the former Black Caps captain on an extraordinary career, he wished him happiness in the next chapter of his life and remarked that “life’s only just begun,” encouraging his friend to enjoy the rewards of years of dedication and hard work.

“From an opponent to a friend over the years. It’s been a pleasure watching you bat and compete against you over so many years but more than that I value our friendship and shared perspectives on the game and beyond. I continue to cherish every time we speak or meet. Wishing you nothing but the best always brother. You’ve done your bit, you deserve to enjoy all of it now and put your feet up. Well done mate, life’s only just begun,” Kohli posted on X.

A rivalry that grew into mutual admiration

The journeys of Kohli and Williamson have been closely intertwined since their appearances at the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. Over the next decade and beyond, both became pillars of world cricket and earned recognition as members of the celebrated “Fab Four,” alongside two other modern-day batting greats.

While they frequently found themselves on opposite sides in high-pressure contests, the respect between the pair was evident on and off the field. Their contrasting personalities and calm professionalism made them admired figures across the global cricket community, with fans often praising the sportsmanship they displayed throughout their careers.

Williamson leaves behind a remarkable legacy

Williamson signs off as one of New Zealand’s most accomplished cricketers, finishing his international career with 19,346 runs in 378 matches. His tally includes 48 centuries and six double hundreds, making him the nation’s highest run-scorer across formats.

His final appearance came in the opening Test of the ongoing series against England at Lord’s. It proved to be a quiet outing with the bat, as he managed scores of 0 and 18 while New Zealand suffered a 115-run defeat.

Beyond his impressive batting numbers, Williamson’s leadership left an equally significant mark. Serving as New Zealand’s captain across formats between 2016 and 2024, he guided the side to multiple ICC tournament knockouts, including two World Cup finals and three semi-finals. His crowning achievement came in 2021 when he led the Black Caps to victory in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship.
