Australia captain Pat Cummins has hinted that his participation in IPL 2027 remains uncertain as he prepares for one of the busiest stretches of international cricket in his career. With Australia set to play up to 21 Test matches over the next 12 months, along with the defence of their ODI World Cup title in 2027, the fast bowler admitted that compromises may be necessary to manage his workload.

Cummins, who captains Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, revealed that Test cricket and the ODI World Cup remain his top priorities, raising the possibility of him sitting out the cash-rich league in 2027.

Australia’s demanding schedule includes away Test series against South Africa, India and England, with the journey eventually leading into the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Given the physical demands of fast bowling and leadership responsibilities, Cummins acknowledged that something may have to give.

“Something has got to give at some stage next year and it’s not going to be Test matches or an ODI World Cup. I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I’ve had a couple of injuries pop up, so I don’t really want to lock in anything,”  Cummins told The Age.

The statement makes it clear that while Cummins has not ruled out IPL 2027, international commitments will ultimately determine his availability.

Test cricket and World Cup remain top priorities

Cummins further stressed that Australia’s major assignments will take precedence over franchise cricket. The pace spearhead believes he may require a break after the challenging India tour before heading into another Ashes battle.

“The priorities for me are always the Test matches and that ODI World Cup. I dare say if I play all of India, I need some sort of break before a pretty gruelling Ashes series,” added Cummins.

Australia are expected to play 13 away Tests across South Africa, India and England during this period, making workload management a major concern for the team’s senior fast bowlers.

    Rotation policy on the cards?

Cummins also discussed the possibility of Australia rotating their pace attack more aggressively in the coming years. Alongside him, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood have all dealt with injury concerns recently, prompting selectors and team management to think long-term.

The Australian captain suggested that the team may need to rely on a broader pool of fast bowlers to successfully navigate the packed schedule.

“Yeah it’s possible. I think we’re fairly open-minded to anything, as we’ve seen over the last couple of years. Whether it’s a home Test or an away Test, we don’t see them as that different. A Test match is a Test match,” explained the Aussie skipper.

The Australian skipper even hinted that certain bowlers could be rested during the latter stages of overseas tours if the team feels recovery time would be more beneficial ahead of crucial series. Such a strategy would help Australia keep their premier fast bowlers fresh for marquee contests while reducing the risk of injuries.

“I see a world where we’re potentially winding some bowlers down, even say at the back end of an Indian series if they don’t look like they’re going to play, to give them an extra rest ahead of the Ashes,” Cummins added further.

Notably, the 33-year-old is currently recovering well after a significant lumbar stress issue that forced him to miss four Ashes Tests during the 2025-26 Australian summer and also ruled him out of the 2026 T20 World Cup. His injury setback delayed his arrival for IPL 2026, where he joined Sunrisers Hyderabad midway through the season. During his absence, Ishan Kishan led the franchise into the playoffs with a combination of explosive batting and impressive performances from a young bowling unit.
