A new trailer for acclaimed director Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has just dropped, adapted from the Greek epic poem of the same title by Homer and starring leading man Matt Damon as the Greek king Odysseus. Additional cast members include Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Mia Goth and Charlize Theron.
Nolan’s The Odyssey charts the king’s long travels home to Ithaca following the Trojan War, during which he and his men encounter many mythical creatures such as the cyclops, sirens and nymphs. Meanwhile, Odysseus’s wife, Penelope, awaits his return.
The original poem was first composed around the 7th or 8th century, divided into 24 sections similar to Homer’s other great war epic, The Iliad. It’s been reported that the director focused heavily on Emily Wilson’s 2017 English-language translation of Homer’s Odyssey for his screenplay, and with a budget of $250 million, the film will be the most expensive feature in Nolan’s filmography.
It is also Nolan’s first IMAX 70 mm film.
The new trailer showcases the king remembering his wife, child and triumph of the war, as well as his longing desire to return home, stating “No one could come between me and home…not even the Gods.” We also see glimpses of the terrifying cyclops charging through the trees towards Odysseus and his men.
Nolan shares production credits with Emma Thomas with Universal Pictures.
The Odyssey hits UK and Irish cinemas on the 17th June.
