Merseyside Police have arrested an Everton supporter following alleged racist abuse directed at Antoine Semenyo during Monday’s 3-3 draw with Manchester City in the Premier League.

The incident took place inside Hill Dickinson Stadium, with police confirming a 71-year-old man from Nottinghamshire was detained on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after reports from supporters and stewards.

He has since been released on bail, but has been restricted from attending football matches within a specified timeframe.

Investigation ongoing as Everton condemn behaviour

Merseyside Police confirmed that enquiries are ongoing, with the club working alongside authorities.

Everton said in a statement that such conduct will not be accepted.

“Racism and discrimination in all forms are completely unacceptable. They have no place in our stadia, our sport or in society,” the club said.

They added that they will continue to support the investigation and take the strongest possible action in line with their zero-tolerance policy.

Semenyo targeted for second time this season

It is the second time this season that Semenyo, a Ghana international, has been subjected to racist abuse.

Earlier in the campaign, while playing for Bournemouth, he reported abuse during a defeat at Liverpool.

Semenyo has previously called for stronger action to tackle racism in football, including tougher punishments for those found guilty.

Manchester City praised the swift response from both Everton and the police, while also revealing that Marc Guehi was subjected to racist abuse online following the match.

The club said they would continue to support both players and made clear that discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated within the game.
