Madrid leader accuses Spanish government of ‘abandoning’ her in ‘violent’ Mexico, Greggs to open branch in Spain, hospital admissions for zoonotic diseases have tripled in Spain in 15 years, and more news from Spain this Wednesday May 13th.

Madrid leader accuses Spanish government of ‘abandoning’ her on trip to Mexico

Madrid’s right-wing regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso recently embarked on a controversial official trip to Mexico, designed to “intensify” economic and cultural relations between the region and the North American country.

Upon her return, however, she accused Pedro Sánchez ‘s government of not providing any support to her and her team in a country “plagued by drug trafficking” and called it an “intolerable abandonment”. She also described Mexico as “deeply violent and dangerous”.

As a result, Ayuso cancelled the final part of her tour, including her attendance at the Platino Awards.

“Anything could have happened to us anywhere,” she said, adding that the Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum, “has dedicated herself every single day, incomprehensibly, to insulting, offending, and attacking us”, she complained.

UK bakery Greggs to open branch in Spain

Greggs, one of the UK’s best-loved bakeries, is opening a branch in Spain for the first time. The bakery, particularly known for its sausage rolls, will open at Tenerife South Airport just in time for the summer season.

As well as its much-loved UK favourites, it will serve items with a Spanish twist, such as its Spanish omelette (tortilla) breakfast roll and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Hospital admissions for zoonotic diseases have tripled in Spain in 15 years

With news about the hantavirus filling our news feeds recently, new research has revealed just how many other diseases have been passed on from animals to humans, showing that cases have tripled in Spain in the last 15 years.

Zoonotic diseases are infections caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi, which spread between animals and humans. It includes everything from avian flu to monkeypox, as well as the recent hantavirus.

The main factors that explain the rise in cases include climate change, which means more animals like mosquitoes and ticks, changes in land use, globalisation, and increased interaction between animals and humans.

Around 60 percent of working hours in Spain could be taken over by AI

According to new McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) report ‘Agents, Robots and Us: How AI is Reshaping Work and Skills in Europe’, 60 percent of working hours in Spain technically could be automated with existing technology.

Of that percentage, 44 percent corresponds to tasks that could be performed by software designed to execute cognitive functions and 15 percent to robots geared towards physical tasks.

Barça’s teen star Yamal waves Palestinian flag during league celebrations

After wrapping up a second-consecutive La Liga crown on Sunday by beating Real Madrid 2-0, Barcelona celebrated their victory with a bus parade on Monday.

During the parade star forward and Spanish international Lamine Yamal was seen waving a Palestinian flag from the vehicle carrying the players.

“I don’t like it,” Barça coach Hansi Flick told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday.

“I spoke to him (Yamal) and if he wants to do it, it’s his decision. He is 18.

“We have to bear in mind what people expect of us. We are playing football and you can see what people expect from us.”

    With additional reporting by AFP.
