Stephen Colbert’s run on The Late Show has come to an end, causing a bit of a shakeup in the world of late-night television. Recently, Seth Meyers, who has a bit of a history with Colbert, has opened up about the end of his colleague’s show. He also spoke a bit about the state that late-night television is in right now.
Seth Meyers Talked About The Fate Of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert have had quite a history together. Meyers has appeared on both The Colbert Report and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. For his part, Colbert has also appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Together with Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and John Oliver, Meyers and Colbert also formed the limited Strike Force Five podcast series. Lasting twelve episodes, this series helped support the five hosts’ staff during the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.
Recently, Colbert aired his last episode of The Late Show as CBS shared that it would be retiring the series’ format. The series finale aired on May 21, 2026. As previously reported, Meyers even appeared on one of the show’s final episodes as part of a Strike Force Five reunion.
Meyers recently weighed in on the end of his friend’s show. Speaking with Deadline, while in Madrid, he shared, “I’m heartbroken. It’s very sad to lose a colleague and even sadder to lose a time slot.”
Despite What Happened, Meyers Is Still ‘Very Optimistic’ About Colbert’s Future
Overall, Meyers felt like this was a bad sign for the world of late-night television. He even felt that Colbert getting replaced was the lesser of two evils, on his own terms, compared to the show getting outright cancelled.
As Meyers continued, “It would be one thing if Stephen was leaving and a younger person was getting a chance to have one of these jobs that are—as someone who’s experienced it—so exciting to have. So, just in general, I think it’s a very sad week for television in America.”

For the time being, Colbert has opened up about one project that he is going to take on following the end of his show. He is co-writing the script for a Lord of the Rings film, tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past.
On his end, Meyers shared that he had high hopes for Colbert’s future. He continued, “I’m also very optimistic that Stephen’s next chapter is going to be exciting for him and for the rest of us. I think he’s been slow-playing this as what his next step was going to be for years, and I’m very excited it’s going to happen.”
