It has just been announced that Anya Taylor-Joy is joining the already stacked cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
She will play the role of Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm, who will be a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil (the returning Lee Pace). She joins a cast that reunites numerous beloved figures from across Middle-earth, including Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo.
Previous new cast additions include Kate Winslet as Marigol, Jamie Dornan as Strider, and Leo Woodall as Halvard,
The film will be directed by Andy Serkis, who will also return to play Gollum. The screenplay is written by Walsh and Boyens, alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The film will follow Aragorn’s quest to capture Gollum before the creature can reveal the Ring’s location to Sauron, and is predominantly developed from Tolkien’s footnotes.
If you are wondering where it falls within the already released films, it is set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.
On the film, Serkis previously said:
“There is so much more to be dug out of this very complex character — the most, perhaps, complex character [J.R.R.] Tolkien wrote, because he kept revisiting it as well, right? You know, multiple times,” Serkis said, adding, “And so there was a desire for a series of return to Middle-earth movies, and this seemed to be a great way in. To be able to bring some of the cast back, but also this is a very much more intimate story and a deep dive and psychological investigation into a character who has become, you know, sort of absorbed into public consciousness in a rather large way. So, it sort of feels like there is a real relevance.”
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is slated for release on December 17th, 2027.
