Netflix is making a major play for the big screen. The streamer has officially partnered with Sony Pictures Entertainment for the international theatrical distribution of Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.
The move marks a significant shift for Netflix, which has historically prioritised streaming releases over traditional theatrical windows. With Sony handling international distribution, Gerwig’s Narnia is set to receive a much wider cinema rollout than initially expected, highlighting the scale of the studio’s ambitions for the fantasy epic.
Based on C.S. Lewis’ beloved novel The Magician’s Nephew, the film will serve as an origin story for Narnia, exploring the magical creation of the iconic world long before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The book, originally published in 1955, is the sixth novel in Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series, but chronologically the first.
The project has become one of Netflix’s most anticipated upcoming releases, not least because it marks Greta Gerwig’s first feature following the global phenomenon of Barbie. Gerwig is writing and directing the adaptation, bringing her distinctive creative vision to one of fantasy literature’s most beloved universes.
The cast includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep, with newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell leading the story as Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, respectively.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is currently scheduled for a global theatrical release on 12th February 2027 before arriving on Netflix on 2nd April 2027.
