The world of cricket moves fast, but the spotlight moves even faster when a teenage prodigy is involved. Just weeks after taking the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 by storm, 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi finds himself at the center of a roaring controversy. During a high-stakes encounter in the Tri-Nation A series in Dambulla, physical altercations and heavy sledging overshadowed the action on the pitch. While fans remain split over who to blame, veteran voices in Indian cricket are refusing to sugarcoat the situation.

Sanjay Manjrekar demands punishment for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s on-field act in the SL-A vs IND-A ODI

Known for his blunt, unfiltered opinions, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar has vocalized what many believe should be a swift disciplinary action. Commenting on the tense post-match clash between India A and Sri Lanka A, Manjrekar suggested that the young prodigy needed a stern lesson in professionalism. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he stated that if he were holding the reins of the India A team, he would have instantly dropped Suryavanshi from the subsequent clash against Afghanistan A to make a clear point.

“If I was India A coach or manager I would have left Vaibhav Suryavanshi out for this game v AFG. Only to let him know that’s it’s not OK to get physical on the field. Whatever the provocations,” Manjrekar wrote.

The controversy erupted immediately after a thrilling Super Over finish that ended in a Sri Lanka A victory. Tempers flared when Sri Lanka’s Vishen Halambage reportedly stepped across the line, launching verbal volleys at Suryansh Shedge and Suryavanshi. Reports from Cricbuzz indicated that Halambage taunted the teenager, telling him, “Go home, this is not the IPL.” Provoked by the continuous sledging that had apparently been building up since the start of the tournament, the young left-hander charged back and pushed Halambage, forcing Sri Lankan veteran Niroshan Dickwella to rush in to separate the players.

While sources confirm that match referees have already cracked down by penalizing both players with a 50% match fee deduction, Manjrekar believes that institutional discipline from within the Indian camp is necessary to prevent a special talent from straying off course.

Technical struggles mount as the prodigy feels the pressure

Suryavanshi’s fiery demeanor on the field mirrors a growing frustration with his batting form. After shattering records by becoming the youngest player ever named in a senior Indian squad, for upcoming tours of Ireland and England, the 15-year-old has struggled to replicate his monumental IPL success on the slower, trickier tracks of Sri Lanka.

During the IPL 2026 season, the explosive opener was a revelation, smashing 776 runs in 16 games at an astonishing strike rate of 237.31 to claim the Orange Cap. However, international white-ball cricket has offered a reality check. Across four matches in the ongoing Tri-Nation Series, he has failed to register a single half-century, returning modest figures of 14, 44, 21, and 38.

In his recent outing against Afghanistan A, his technical vulnerabilities outside the off-stump were heavily tested. Suryavanshi rode his luck after surviving an early dropped catch and a dismissed duck that was overturned by replays showing an unclean catch. Just as he seemed to hit his stride, scoring 38 off 28 balls, he threw his wicket away to a short ball. For India’s newest wunderkind, the road ahead requires cooling the temper and adjusting the technique if he is to live up to the massive expectations awaiting him in national colors.
