Kanye West’s daughter North‘s bold fashion choices could lead to more permanent problems if care is not taken.
The 13-year-old was the subject of a heated conversation after videos emerged of her interacting with her guests at Paris Fashion Week.
North’s mother, Kim Kardashian, has previously defended her fashion choices, while her dad, Kanye West, has often spoken up against her appearance and the way his ex-wife is raising their children.
North West has often shown off her unconventional fashion choices, which include piercings to her fingers, lip, and face, on social media, accompanied by a debut track titled “Piercing on My Hand.”
Critics have called out her famous parents for not being stern about her appearance, but they’ve seemingly paid lip service to the uproar, with her mom appearing in a video on their joint TikTok account to tell fans that “it’s okay.”
However, medical experts have now warned that the teenager may be left with more problems to deal with should things go wrong, and these can range from rejection to scarring to disfigurement.
Renowned dermatologist Corey Hartman advised that it is better not to subscribe to doing it in the first place because of the long-term effects they pose.
“Long term, these piercings can lead to hypertrophic scars, hyperpigmentation, disfigurement, and loss of function of the body part where the piercing is done, particularly in patients with highly melanated skin, like North West,” he said, per the New York Post.
Kanye West’s Daughter’s Piercings Are Unconventional
According to the news outlet, North’s piercings are known to be a combination of surface and dermal piercings, with both being more complex than the typical earlobe piercing.
Surface piercings have become a massive trend among North’s age group, as they break away from traditional features (like the earlobe or nose) and allow jewelry to sit flush against completely flat areas of the body.
On the other hand, a dermal piercing is a type of body modification with a single-point piercing, meaning it has a clear entry point on the skin, but no exit point. The jewelry is anchored entirely from underneath the skin’s surface with a specialized anchor.
This type of piercing is quite delicate, and changing the jewelry regularly could quickly become an issue, leaving experts to recommend the help of a professional piercer for such a quest.
While some of her more recent additions, like metallic studs trailing down her wrist, have been rumored to be temporary stick-ons, the visible marks and redness left behind on her fingers and other body parts suggest others could be real.
Kim Kardashian Defended Her Daughter’s Right To Self-Expression
Despite the chatter that has surrounded her appearance, North’s parents have consistently backed her style choices.
Kardashian in particular defended her daughter’s right to self-expression, stating on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that she avoids limiting her children’s creative individuality.
“I would never take that creativity away from her,” the SKIMS founder told podcast host Alex Cooper. “I just think anyone that’s raising kids, especially four kids by myself, I’m doing the best that I can.”
“She’s usually a girl that, that dresses like a tomboy most of the time,” Kardashian explained. “She wanted to try something that her friends were wearing and went to the same place that they went to, and they all got these outfits, and then she wears them, and it’s just like, ‘OK, wait, maybe you can’t wear that.’ And so as a mom, you’re kind of learning at the same time.”
Unlike Kardashian, North’s father, Kanye, has often expressed his dissatisfaction with how she comes out and how his ex-wife is raising her in particular.
North West Doesn’t Allow The Critics To Get To Her
North seemingly doesn’t care about what her detractors are saying and has previously fired back in a TikTok video to “everyone that’s mad over a finger piercing,” per Page Six.
In the said clip, she lip-synced along to an audio from reality star Chrisean Rock, saying, “Why are you crying? How old are you? Just pull it together.”
In her interview with Cooper, Kardashian explained that she stands her ground well and doesn’t let the naysayers get to her.
“She’ll be like, ‘Mom, I saw this, and I don’t really care if someone says they don’t like my blue hair, or my this or that,’” the reality TV star explained. “And she’s really confident and is like, ‘I probably wouldn’t be hanging out with those people.’”
Kim Kardashian Says The Teenager Listens To Her
Despite giving her daughter freedom to be herself, Kardashian noted that she can be stern and that North always listens to her.
The “KUWTK” alum shared that she tries to strike a balance between enforcing strict rules on the 13-year-old and helping her nurture her creative aspect.
“She does listen to me,” Kardashian noted, “but in other areas, I’m like, ‘Babe, if you want blue hair, it is what it is.’ It makes her so happy.”
“I would never take that creative away from her,” the reality TV star added.
