Nationals first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. is drawing trade attention from “multiple teams,” according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon and Spencer Nusbaum. None of the talks have gone beyond “a preliminary stage,” as the Nats are still evaluating their plans heading into the August 3 trade deadline.
One natural complication to a Garcia trade is that the Nats themselves are still in contention. Yesterday’s 23-4 demolition of the Athletics brought Washington back to an even 49-49 record, and the Nationals are three games back of the Cardinals for the final NL wild card slot. The D.C. squad has a +26 run differential and is at or near the top of the majors in most offensive categories, including a league-best 539 runs, 513 RBI, 105 stolen bases (plus 142 homers that ties the Nationals with the Yankees for the MLB lead).
Garcia has been a huge part of this offensive explosion. A down year in 2025 led to some speculation that the Nationals might non-tender Garcia last winter, but new president of baseball operations Paul Toboni opted to retain Garcia on a $6.875MM salary. The decision has proven to be a wise one, as Garcia is hitting .284/.317/.554 with 20 homers over 319 plate appearances, translating to a 134 wRC+.
It is also possible that Garcia’s move from second to first base has had a psychological impact on his play, as Garcia has gone from being a defensive liability to a decent (+1 Outs Above Average, +1 Defensive Runs Saved) glove as a first baseman. As Sammon and Nusbaum note, Washington’s new hitting coaches chose to tweak rather than overhaul Garcia’s swing mechanics this spring. Garcia’s Statcast indicate that the offensive improvement is for real, though his chase and walk rates remain troublingly low and almost all of his damage has come against right-handed pitching.
Garcia’s unexpected offensive emergence basically sums up the Nationals as a whole, as many expected the rebuilding team to be among the worst in baseball. While a .500 record is very impressive in this context, it remains to be seen if the Nationals can stay in the playoff race given how their pitching has been about as bad as their offense has been good. Some continued good play over the next two weeks might convince Toboni and company to acquire some pitching and take a shot at a wild card berth, even if the Nats aren’t likely to be buyers to any great extent even if they do add.
There is also an emotional element to consider. As Sammon and Nusbaum put it, “Garcia…is the longest-tenured National and has been an integral part of Washington’s clubhouse culture, which could complicate the decision for an executive group that is mindful of what a sell-off could do to team morale.” Even if the front office believe prospects Abimelec Ortiz or Yohandy Morales can replicate at some of Garcia’s first base offense as early as this year, trading Garcia probably wouldn’t over well with a Nats roster that likely feels they’ve done enough to put the team in position to buy at the deadline.
Toboni must weigh Garcia’s leadership on and off the field against the question or whether or not the Nationals can be true contenders during what remains of the first baseman’s team control. Garcia is eligible for arbitration one final time this winter before entering free agency in the 2027-28 offseason, and that extra year of control may also be an argument in favor of a trade, as suitors will give up more for a player they can have for two playoff runs instead of one.
