Over a decade ago, Barack Obama raised a few eyebrows, and made a few headlines, with a certain tan suit. Recently, years after his presidency, he has addressed the story. He’s also got someone helping him paint a picture of what might have happened: comedian Larry David.
Barack Obama Famously Wore A Tan Suit During A Live White House Press Conference In 2014
Obama served as the 44th president of the United States, first starting his term in 2009 and being reelected in 2013. Prior to this, he represented Illinois in the United States Senate and served as an Illinois state senator.
Following his presidency, Obama has been pursuing all sorts of ventures. These have included international appearances, such as an upcoming UK tour in October, and launching the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s Jackson Park. He has also made a few media appearances.
Recently, the former president appeared on Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness. This sketch comedy series, which stars Larry David, is even produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions.
During his recent appearance on the show, Obama poked fun at an incident that took place around 11 years beforehand. At the time, the president wore a tan suit to a press briefing. The moment was featured in headlines for days, with many commentators feeling that the outfit was too casual for the proceedings.

During the skit, however, Obama “reveals” that Larry David was the one behind the decision. This appears in the series’ season finale, in which David reimagines himself at the heart of various historical events. In the seventh and final episode, David portrays Obama’s aide, with the former president playing himself. As the scene opens up, Obama reviews his wardrobe for a trip to Turin, Italy, for a NATO summit. The tan number appears among the choices.
In the sketch, David asks to try the president’s Mango Tango protein shake, which Obama denies. When he’s not looking, David takes a sip, only to spill the orange drink over the president’s suit jacket. Trying to cover for himself, David convinces Obama to go with the tan suit for a press conference, saying, “Well, first of all, it’s a gorgeous suit.”
Obama replies, “And that’s why I’m taking it to Turin. There’s a daytime event. It’s outdoors, a little more casual.” However, David assures, “And this is casual Friday. [I] won’t let you down. You’ll thank me.”
When the president asked how he looks, David reuses his Curb Your Enthusiasm line, “Pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.” Obama is still unsure, but David continues, “I’ve never been more sure about anything in my life. People are gonna be talking about this for a long, long time.”
