Lionsgate has officially signed on actor Mason Thames to lead the upcoming film Caine, a John Wick spinoff directed by martial arts master Donnie Yen. The script will be penned by Mattson Tomlin, who also has credits on Matt Reeves’ upcoming comic book adaptation and sequel, The Batman Part II
Yen will rejoin musician and actor Rina Sawayama in reprising their roles from John Wick: Chapter 4.
“The new film will continue Yen’s story arc following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, as Caine has been freed from his obligations to The High Table,” sources confirm.
Derek Kolstad created the neo-noir action thriller media franchise, which focuses on a retired hitman, played by Keanu Reeves, who is pulled back into the world of crime. The franchise has earned a combined box office gross of more than $1 billion worldwide.
The John Wick series consists of John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, and John Wick: Chapter 4 by director Charles Stahelski and Ballerina by director Len Wiseman.
There is also an upcoming fifth film, John Wick: Chapter 5, by Stahelski and another untitled prequel film by Shannon Tindle.
Thames is known for his performances in the horror film The Black Phone and last year’s sequel, alongside Ethan Hawke, by filmmaker Scott Derrickson; as well as DreamWorks’ live-action re-tellings of their hit animated fantasy series, How to Train Your Dragon, and is set to appear in the upcoming sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2.
