The trailer for the hotly anticipated Shrek 5 has just dropped, and it’s every bit chaotic, laugh-out loud funny, and risqué as before.
Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy reprise their roles as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, and Zendaya (The Odyssey, SpiderMan) joins the cast as Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona. Also reported to be joining the cast are Marcello Hernandez (Saturday Night Live, Happy Gilmore 2) and Skyler Gisondo (Superman, Booksmart) as Felicia’s brothers, Fergus and Farkle.
Shrek 5 sees the gang on yet another “whirlwind, big city adventure”, this time to Further, Further, Away. There’s no telling what awaits them in this new city, but if this trailer is anything to go off, it’s utter pandemonium: Fiona is flying on a broom with mermaids in tow; there’s a cops/knights chase, Donkey turns into a goat, and they wind up in jail. 2027 can’t come soon enough.
This trailer shines a contemporary light on these beloved characters that have been with us since the release of the first Shrek movie in 2001. You see the Gingerbread Man twerking and Donkey noted as being ‘delusional’; reflecting the language and popular culture scene that exists today across Gen Z and Millennials alike.
The fourth instalment of the Shrek franchise hit our screens in 2010 and quickly became a major hit, grossing $497 million internationally. It ranks at number 4 in DreamWorks Animation’s top 10 highest grossing movies of all time, according to Box Office Mojo, trailing behind Shrek, Shrek the Third and Shrek 2, which takes the top spot.
Despite the lack of Directorial consistency with the Shrek franchise over the years, fear not! Walt Dohrn (Trolls) who voiced Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek: Forever After has joined forces with Conrad Vernon who co-directed Shrek 2, for its fifth instalment. Brad Ableson, who previously worked as a Story Artist on The Simpsons, is also serving as co-director.
Shrek 5 will be released on 3oth June 2027.
