The Canadian Football League will soon launch its first official season-long fantasy football game, according to a post on its website.
Fans can sign up to participate by submitting an email address, which promises to provide users with “insider updates and launch details.”
The webpage features a few blurbs about the game, indicating participants will create a league, hold a draft prior to kickoff on June 4, then participate in weekly games and playoffs. There is also a disclaimer indicating the game will be available in English and French.
The CFL has also provided specifics regarding roster construction. Each team will feature a “QB superflex,” running back, three receivers, a “national flex,” kicker, defence/special teams, five bench players, and two injured reserve players.
The QB superflex spot is primarily meant for quarterbacks, though it can also be filled with a running back or receiver in the case of bye weeks or injuries. The national flex spot must be filled by a running back or receiver who is Canadian.
The league provided some further details in a social media post on Sunday, revealing drafts will be 13 rounds and the game will include trades and a waiver wire.
During the Grey Cup in Winnipeg, CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston announced what he termed a “historic commitment to modernize (the league’s) digital platforms,” including new league and team websites, a new smartphone app, and a season-long fantasy game.
“Season-long fantasy is a gateway to fandom,” said Johnston at the time. “The uniqueness of football makes it the sport of choice for fantasy players, and this new offering is another example of how we are moving forward, engaging current fans, attracting new ones, and connecting with the next generation of CFL supporters.”
It remains unclear when the league will launch its new websites and smartphone app, but the season-long fantasy game appears close to making its debut.
