Filming has recently wrapped on Entre olas, a romantic coming-of-age film in which the spectacular natural beauty of the island of Tenerife forms the narrative backbone. Directed by Chloé Wallace (Mala influencia, the mini-series El cuento perfecto), the film follows a love triangle involving young actors Carla Tous (El hombre del saco, A través del mar and A través de tu mirada), Nuno Gallego (the series Gangs of Galicia, Olympo and Animal) and Jan Buxaderas (Balandrau: Where the Fierce Wind Blew, Todos los lados de la cama), set against the world of surfing. The cast in completed by Dariam Coco, Fer Fraga, Pablo Cabello, Javier Albalá (Mikaela) and Ana Asensio (Most Beautiful Island).
With a screenplay by Marta Sánchez, Irene Niubó and Nieves García Bautista, the film follows Ali, who arrives on Isla Azul to spend the summer with her father. There she reconnects with Rodrigo, her childhood friend, who has now become the perfect guy: handsome, confident and with a promising future ahead of him. But she also meets Marc, a free spirit who teaches her to surf and to see the world, and herself, from a different perspective. As Ali ventures deeper into the wild corners of Isla Azul, she uncovers a conflict threatening the island’s delicate natural balance. Torn between two ways of seeing the world – the stability represented by Rodrigo and the freedom embodied by Marc – she realises it is no longer simply a choice between two boys, but between two futures: the one she wants for the island, the one she wants for herself.
“There’s an idea I believe in: films that make you feel good isn’t inferior cinema. Making a film that gives you something back (joy, tenderness, nostalgia) is an act of generosity towards the audience. And that is exactly what I would like to do with this story,” said Chloé Wallace. “Entre olas is a film about summer love: the kind that lasts as long as it lasts, and that is why it’s perfect. About friendship, about the nostalgia for a moment that you know, even as you’re living it, you’ll never forget. And about what I think is one of the most beautiful questions there is: who do I want to be? That moment when you reach a fork in the road, when the path opens up and you have to choose, even if you’re not quite sure how,” she adds.
“And the sea and surfing are there as a state of mind — a way of being present, of feeling your body, of belonging to something bigger than yourself,” continues the director. “I’m also very interested in what this film says about young girls: about giving them a leading role in their own story, about showing them desiring and choosing, not just being chosen. I think that’s political in the best sense of the word.” She concludes: “There’s something else that matters a great deal to me: we live on a planet that needs us to look after it more carefully. This film says this without shouting, because I believe the best way to convince someone to look after something is to make them fall in love with it first.”
Entre olas is produced by Buendía Estudios Canarias, Atresmedia Cine and La Pepa Films; in co-production with Basque Films, Xoelius and Veguchini and Ocean Love Story AIE with the participation of Atresmedia and Netflix. The film will be distributed in Spanish cinemas by Warner Bros Pictures Spain.
