The success of “Dutton Ranch” may be creating a problem of its own. As the “Yellowstone” successor builds momentum for another season, tensions behind the scenes are reportedly turning the fight for attention into a bigger issue. 

Sources claim some of the show’s biggest names are clashing over screen time, influence and their place within the ensemble, with Annette Bening’s growing presence and Ed Harris’ public frustrations putting the spotlight on a production where everyone appears to want a bigger piece of the story.

‘Dutton Ranch’ Reportedly Turns Screen Time Into A Power Struggle

The reported friction surrounding “Dutton Ranch” appears to involve more than ordinary disagreements between actors. Sources speaking to the Daily Mail described the production as “a mess of a show,” while another characterized the atmosphere as “high drama” and “so much tension.”

At the heart of the claims is reportedly a fight over visibility and influence. One source argued that the problem stems from performers having too much say in how the production operates.

“I believe it’s the actors that are a huge part of the problem,” the source said, adding, “Too many people think they are in control over there and that’s causing a lot of issues.”

The reports come with the franchise still carrying the expectations created by “Yellowstone,” which ended after the highly publicized fallout between Kevin Costner and creator Taylor Sheridan. 

With “Dutton Ranch” now establishing its own identity, sources claim some of its leading performers are also trying to establish their position within the ensemble.

Another insider summarized the alleged competition more bluntly, saying disagreements have centered on “camera time, control” and who is “top dog.”

‘Dutton Ranch’ Sources Say Annette Bening Knows How To Get Her Way

Annette Bening has reportedly emerged as one of the strongest personalities within that environment. 

The actress plays Beulah Jackson, owner of 10 Petal Ranch, and sources claim her experience and reputation have given her considerable influence on the set.

“There is some drama among the major players,” one source claimed, further revealing, “Everyone wants more screen time.”

According to the insider, Bening would like additional scenes with Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, with their chemistry reportedly seen as something that could further benefit the show. 

The source portrayed Bening as particularly effective at advocating for herself, saying, “Annette usually gets her way as she is very clever and persuasive.” They added, “She is savvy about how sets work and knows how to get what she wants.”

The insider also described her as a hardworking woman and a team player, qualities that have apparently helped establish her as one of the production’s influential figures.

‘Dutton Ranch’ Gives Ed Harris More After Actor’s Screen-Time Complaint

Ed Harris’ reported experience illustrates how the screen-time issue can become personal. The 75-year-old actor plays Everett McKinney, Beulah’s lover, but previously expressed disappointment with the amount of material he received.

In July, The Blast reported that Harris described his role as “inconsequential” despite saying he had initially been promised something more substantial. His frustration became so pronounced that he said he told his agent to “get me the f-ck out of here” and threatened to cancel his contract.

One particular disappointment involved a bar scene in which Harris sang a tender song. He was unhappy that the sequence was ultimately cut after he had invested significant effort in the performance.

Actor James Eddie, who played Tommy, acknowledged hearing “whispers” about unhappiness surrounding Harris’ storyline. He said he was not surprised by the reports because Everett had not received much material at certain points.

However, Harris’ complaints may ultimately lead to a different outcome. A source claimed, “Ed Harris will remain on the show and his role will get even bigger,” saying Sheridan intended to honor the original promise made to the actor.

The insider acknowledged the actor “made himself look like he has a really big ego,” but offered a more favorable assessment of his talent, noting, “He can be prickly. But he’s great on screen, so there’s that.”

‘Dutton Ranch’ Season 2 Undergoes Major Shakeup Ahead Of Return

Even though the core cast is expected to remain the same, the future of “Dutton Ranch” is already looking different behind the scenes.

The show is heading into its next chapter with a new person in charge. In June, The Hollywood Reporter shared that Benjamin Cavell, whose credits include “Justified” and “SEAL Team,” had taken over as showrunner from Chad Feehan. 

The change came after Feehan’s departure, with the exact circumstances not publicly explained, though reports suggested he had difficulty handling the show’s high-profile cast.

‘Dutton Ranch’ Season 2 Sets Up A New Chapter For Reilly And Hauser

While the behind-the-scenes changes have attracted attention, the biggest reason viewers are anticipating “Dutton Ranch” Season two remains the unfinished story of Beth and Rip. 

Reilly and Hauser are expected to reprise their roles as the married couple, whose attempt to build a new life in South Texas was thrown into chaos by the Season one finale. 

The nine-episode season ended with their adopted son Carter being kidnapped, while Beth also received a threatening call from Mariano, setting up a potentially dangerous confrontation for the next installment. 

The finale also left questions surrounding Rob-Will’s death and the future of Beulah Jackson’s 10 Petal operation. 

Paramount+ renewed the series on June 24, before Season 1 had even finished airing, following its record-breaking debut. 

There is currently no official Season two premiere date, but production is expected to begin in 2027, with early reports pointing toward a possible late-2027 or early-2028 return.
