The much-anticipated opening clash of the bilateral series between England and India on July 01, 2026, at Chester-le-Street promised a thrilling start to the summer. However, the first T20I concluded with mixed emotions for fans and pundits alike. While the English weather ultimately had the final say, the major talking point surrounding the Indian camp was the continued omission of 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi from the playing XI.

Ravi Shastri opens up on Vaibhav Suryavanshi missing out on his international debut

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri did not mince his words regarding the team management’s decision to keep Suryavanshi on the bench. The flamboyant young opener, who took the IPL by storm with his fearless approach against world-class fast bowlers, was named in India’s squad for the twin tours of Ireland and England. Yet, he is still waiting to earn his maiden international cap.

Speaking live during the broadcast at Chester-le-Street, Shastri strongly criticized the decision to bench the teenager, particularly during the preceding series in Ireland. According to Shastri, the slow and spongy nature of Irish pitches combined with shorter boundaries would have served as the perfect launchpad for Suryavanshi’s explosive power-hitting.

“He should’ve played in Ireland, that is such a slow and spongy track; he would’ve hit it on the roof as it was a small ground. He had to play there,” Shastri stated bluntly.

Shastri emphasized that the 15-year-old possesses an ‘X-factor’ and plays without the psychological baggage that often restricts senior cricketers. He urged the team management to blood the youngster into the starting line-up immediately rather than letting him warm the bench, noting that even a brief, fiery cameo at the top of the order could drastically shift momentum in India’s favour.

England and India’s T20I opener falls victim to rain

While the debate over Suryavanshi’s debut dominated off-field discussions, the action on the pitch was cut short by relentless rain, resulting in a frustrating ‘No Result’. Despite the damp end to the evening, India’s batting unit showcased an aggressive intent after being put into bat, finishing their full quota of 20 overs at a competitive 189/7.

The innings suffered a disastrous start, losing opener Sanju Samson for just 7 runs and Ishan Kishan for a two-ball duck, leaving India reeling at 6/2 within the first two overs. However, Abhishek Sharma spearheaded a spectacular counter-attack. The left-hander brought up a blistering half-century off just 20 deliveries, eventually falling for 59 off 24 balls, an innings studded with 3 fours and 7 colossal sixes.

Abhishek found an able partner in captain Shreyas Iyer, who anchored the middle overs with a composed 68 off 47 balls. After Tilak Varma departed for a run-a-ball 13, Shivam Dube provided the final flourish, remaining unbeaten on 42 off just 21 balls at a strike rate of 200.00.

For England, Saqib Mahmood was the pick of the bowlers, registering impressive figures of 3/33 in his 4 overs, while Sam Curran and Adil Rashid picked up one wicket apiece. Unfortunately for the packed crowd at Chester-le-Street, the rain arrived during the innings break, preventing England’s run chase from ever getting underway and leaving the series locked at 0-0 heading into the next fixture.
