Jean-Luc Gaget has been shooting Le petit boucher, his 3rd fiction feature after J’ai tué Clémence Acéra (2001) and This Charming Girl (2025), since 28 May.
Stealing focus in the cast are Pierre Lottin (named Best Supporting Actor in San Sebastián and nominated for the Best Newcomer Lumière via When Fall Is Coming, nominated for the Best Supporting Actor César thanks to The Stranger and Best Newcomer for The Marching Band; also at his best this year in The Money Maker and Just An Illusion), youngster Niels Hamel-Brochen (soon to be seen in Molière, Cyrano and the Young King), India Hair (nominated twice for the Best Newcomer César and well-received in Cannes this year in Marvellous Mornings and Parallel Tales) and Maud Wyler (No Love Lost, The Bare Necessity). They’re joined by young Valentine Billioud, Jean-Noël Brouté (whose work also includes films by Bruno Podalydès) and Quentin Dolmaire (nominated for the Best Newcomer César and Lumière awards via My Golden Days and soon appearing in Un champ de fraises pour l’éternité).
Written by the director (the winner of the 2017 Best Original Screenplay César thanks to The Together Project and nominated in the Best Adapted Screenplay category in 2015 via Lulu in the Nude), the story takes us back to the early ‘70s. Baptiste is growing up with his two brothers in his parents’ butcher’s shop and his future seems all mapped out before him: one day he’ll take over the family business. But Baptiste has a different dream: he wants to be a comic book artist. A fan of Gotlib and an avid reader of Pilote at a time when it’s revolutionising the 9th art, he spends his days drawing and creating a magical little world with pen strokes and humour. The arrival of a new art teacher, who he secretly falls in love with, encourages him to believe in his gift: at the age of twelve and a half, anything is possible…
Le petit boucher is being produced by Sébastien Haguenauer on behalf of 10:15! Productions and by Julien Naveau for Le Plein de Super, in co-production with France 3 Cinéma, Bonne Pioche Cinéma, Nour Films (who are also overseeing distribution in French cinemas) and Belgian firm Wrong Men. Pre-purchased by Canal+, Ciné+ OCS and France Télévisions, the feature film enjoys further support from the Brittany and Ile-de-France regions, as well as from the SOFICA companies Entourage and Cinémage. The 40-day film shoot will proceed until 29 July in Saint-Brieuc and then Paris, with Mathilde Cathelin heading up photography. World sales will fall to Other Angle Pictures.
For the record, 10:15! Productions and Le Plein de Super wrapped filming on Élise Girard’s Sens de la vie last Thursday (read our article).
