The Spanish production company Zeta Studios and Rei Pictures, based in Buenos Aires, Madrid and Mexico City, have announced the upcoming production of Impunity, a high-octane spy thriller to be directed by Chilean filmmaker Felipe Gálvez, who won the FIPRESCI Prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section three years ago with The Settlers, a co-production between Chile, Argentina, Denmark, the UK, France, Germany and Taiwan.
Impunity will star the Romanian-American actor Sebastian Stan (Oscar nominee for The Apprentice and Silver Bear winner for A Different Man, and at Cannes this year with Fjörd) and Cuban-Spanish actress Ana de Armas (Oscar nominee for Blonde). Both actors, will also serve as executive producers. The feature film will be shot in English and Spanish across Spain, Chile and the United Kingdom. The cast also includes Chilean actors Alfredo Castro (recently seen in They Will Be Dust, for which he received a Goya nomination), Antonia Zegers (nominated for a Goya for Los Tortuga) and Alejandro Goic (White on White).
The screenplay, written by the director alongside Antonia Girardi (The Settlers) and Mariano Llinás (director of La flor, co-writer of Argentina, 1985 and The Summit, among others), is based on 38 Londres Street, a book by the British lawyer Philippe Sands. Set in 1998, the film delves into the shadowy corridors of power following the arrest of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in London, an operation led from Spain by Judge Baltasar Garzón that shocked the world. For the first time, a former dictator could lose his immunity and face justice outside his own country. The plot follows a Chilean special correspondent (Ana de Armas) and an NGO mercenary (Sebastian Stan), who become entangled in a web of betrayals and geopolitical manoeuvring. The film reveals how justice is negotiated behind closed doors while the real battle unfolds in the shadows, far from the courtroom. The protagonists must navigate a clash of conflicting interests and moral dilemmas as they champion causes that challenge their own convictions.
“With Impunity, I want to explore the forgotten pages of our history,” says Felipe Gálvez. “Using the language of the spy genre not to glorify conspiracies, but to reveal how justice itself can be negotiated, delayed and turned into a spectacle.”
“This film represents both a cinematic challenge and a historical responsibility. Felipe Gálvez’s vision will resonate with global audiences questioning the very foundations of our modern society. This film demonstrates our industry’s maturity in producing profound, gripping stories with a genuine commitment to remembrance,” the production companies have stated.
Impunity is produced by the Spanish companies Zeta Studios and Rei Pictures, in collaboration with Pathé (France), which will launch international sales at the Cannes Marché du Film, as well as Ronda Cine (Chile), Quiddity (United Kingdom), Les Films du Worso (France) and Snowglobe (Denmark).
