    Healthcare Moves: A Monthly Summary of Hires, Exits and Layoffs

    Hires

    Clinical documentation startup Abridge welcomed San Oo as its chief technology officer. In the past, he held tech leadership positions at Slack and Notion.

    Amae Health, a startup focused on treating severe mental illness, named Thai Bui as chief product officer. Before joining Amae, he spent more than six years in product management at Roblox

    The American Medical Association appointed Dr. John Wigneswaran as its chief operating officer. He joins the organization from Optum, where he served as chief clinical officer. Before that, Dr. Wigneswaran worked as chief medical officer Walmart, Express Scripts and DaVita.

    Highmark Health hired Heather Cianfrocco as its new COO. She comes from UnitedHealth Group, where she served as executive vice president of governance, compliance and information security.

    Medical device company Imperative Care named Jay Martin as its chief commercial officer. He has more than a decade of experience in sales leadership roles at Intuitive Surgical and Boston Scientific.

    Merck appointed Chuck Clapton as vice president of U.S. federal public policy and government affairs. He is joining the drugmaker from Gilead Sciences, where he spent nearly a decade as vice president of federal government affairs.

    Orca Bio hired Bijan Nejadnik as its new chief medical officer. He is coming to the pharma company from Tanabe Pharma America, where he held the same role. Before that, he also worked as chief medical officer of SanBio and Eureka Therapeutics. 

    Theromics, which makes a thermal accelerant gel, welcomed Andrew Zeringue as its new CEO. He joined the company from Quantum Surgical, where he serves as the senior U.S. sales director.

    Medical device maker VahatiCor appointed Harry Rowland as its new CEO. He is the co-founder and former CEO of Endotronix, which was acquired by Edwards Lifesciences in 2024.

    Promotions

    University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center promoted Dr. Albert Koong as its chief scientific officer. He joined the organization in 2017 as head of radiation oncology.

    NYC Health + Hospitals named two new chief medical officers. Dr. Sewit Teckie became the chief medical officer for clinical affairs and business strategy, Dr. Ted Long became chief medical officer for clinical services and population health. Dr. Teckie joined the health system in 2022 as chief of radiation oncology, and Dr. Long joined in 2018 as vice president of primary care.

    Exits

    Marty Makary resigned from his position as FDA Commissioner after 13 months on the job. He left the agency after months of clashes with the White House and other Trump administration officials over issues including flavored-vape approvals and abortion pill policy.

    Mayo Clinic CEO Gianrico Farrugia announced that he is stepping down at the end of the year. He has worked within the organization for 32 years, serving as its top executive since 2019.

    Layoffs

    St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia is laying off 30 clinical and administrative staff members. This reduction accounts for less than 2% of the hospital’s workforce.

    Innovaccer let go of 340 employees as part of a restructuring tied to its push to become an “AI-native” company.

    Intermountain Health is eliminating 93 clinical roles in Colorado and Montana. The layoffs stem from the closure and consolidation of 10 clinics across the two states.

    Novartis is laying off 76 workers at its U.S. headquarters in New Jersey. The company said this move is a result of its ever-evolving business needs.
