Despite years of rumours and speculation, Idris Elba claims he was never in serious contention to play the next James Bond.
With Amazon MGM Studios’ recent announcement that the “search for the next James Bond is underway,” fans of the 007 series are eager to find out who will be next to take on the iconic role.
The Golden Globe-winning Luther actor has been one of the names most commonly suggested by fans as an ideal James Bond candidate for nearly the past decade. He even previously admitted he was honoured by the rumours. But while recently promoting his upcoming movie, Masters of the Universe, in Los Angeles, Elba told People Magazine he’s not in the running, saying:
“My name’s not getting thrown out, no way. They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can’t wait — it’s going to be amazing. I’m honestly not in the race ever. I wasn’t in the race in the first place.”
Casting director Nina Gold is now working with director Denis Villeneuve and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman to find who will play the next Bond. According to Deadline, Gold says whoever is cast must “ooze sex appeal.”
The next Bond actor is also expected to appear in at least three films.
Elba plays Man-at-Arms/Duncan in the new Masters of the Universe, which opens June 3rd.
