The former Today Show anchor has been critical of President Trump and his policies. However, her latest comments took aim at her former home, CBS.
Katie Couric made history when she joined CBS as the first solo female anchor on network television. But the celebration was short-lived. She anchored CBS Nightly News for nearly five years before departing. She left to launch a daytime talk show and a role at ABC News. Her exit was reportedly due to low ratings and backstage drama.
The behind-the-scenes drama at CBS News reached a fever pitch when Bari Weiss took over as editor-in-chief in October 2025. The news division, including 60 Minutes, faced layoffs and resignations amid the change in leadership. Bari Weiss has allegedly aligned the network’s news to President Trump’s agenda.
Katie Couric spoke out about news networks “fudging” the truth to appease the President. In a recent interview with Status, she graded the network low for honesty and transparency. “It’s not an F,” she said. “But unfortunately, the stories coming out of 60 Minutes about trying to direct the storytelling in a way that is less offensive to the administration or that fudges the truth is a total embarrassment. It’s hard to measure, but there is probably some anticipatory obedience, if you will.”
She called the reports from fired 60 Minutes anchors “troubling.” “When corporate interests are trying to achieve something with the administration’s blessing, it’s hard for the news organizations to be completely independent and liberated to report and to seek out the truth,” she said.
