Korea Tourism Organization reports that a country frequently associated with technological advances such as those provided by electronics industry giant Samsung also continues to carefully preserve its long history.

The KTO’s Hillary Nguyen told a recent Toronto-area gathering that tourists exploring Korea can visit historic villages “where traditions have been preserved for centuries… Folk villages give insight into traditional ways of living from the past.”

Among those villages hosting visitors are Hahoe and Yangdong, both of which have UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

“From historical royal sites to beautiful scenery, every corner of the country has something to enjoy,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen — whose presentation showcased “local gems” found in the Asian nation — noted those vacationing in Korea can overnight in Buddhist temples, something she said provides a “unique cultural experience.”

Those opting for a temple stay can participate in Zen meditation, tea ceremonies and mourning Buddhist chanting, and also dine on vegan cuisine.

More information on temple stays can be found at eng.templestay.com

Vegan cuisine is seeing increased popularity in Korea, with those going that route praising it for its healthy qualities and its being better for the planet.

The KTO reports that visitors can take Korean cooking classes. with Korean cuisine being “rich in history and flavour.”

Nguyen added that visitors can also experience Hanbang, traditional Korean medicine treatments that, for instance, use red ginseng — believed to have energizing and anti-aging qualities — to improve health.

“Many Hanbang medical tours also incorporate beauty and wellness,” the tourism organization says.

Nguyen also said that tourists can visit Korean traditional markets, enjoying street food and and buying local products while doing so.

Nguyen said fans of Korean internationally popular cultural expression K-Pop will be in their element in its homeland, citing the likes of Seoul’s K-Pop Square,  a media plaza dedicated to

K-pop content and the spot where Huntrix’s “Golden” music video was revealed. A massive 3D square billboard is famous for its crashing wave illusion.

Meanwhile, the KTO reports the K-ETA exemption period has been officially extended through December and visa-free entry continues for Canadian
passport holders for stays of up to 180 days.

“Entry remains simple and convenient,” the KTO says.
