Nathan Fillion will happily take on another identity as long as it helps him escape legal trouble.

The renowned actor recently shared a hilarious encounter with fans, recalling the time he was mistaken for Jason Bateman during a traffic stop.

Nathan Fillion has starred on various popular shows like “Castle,” “The Rookie,” and its spin-off series, “The Rookie: Feds.” He plays officer John Nolan on the series and also serves as an executive producer.

At the San Diego Comic-Con on Monday, July 27, Fillion and other cast members of “The Rookie” shared their traffic-stop stories and how being celebrities helped them get out of these situations. When it was the actor’s turn, he recounted a funny story with an officer.

Fillion explained that he did not have his ID card with him when the cop pulled him over, but the man recognized him as an actor. A not-so-humble Fillion immediately confirmed the claim, recalling that he said, “Yes, I’m actually pretty good,” which caused fans to laugh.

As seen in the video shared by PEOPLE on Instagram, Fillion claimed the cop offered to let him go with a warning if he gave his wife an autograph. As the entertainer began filling in the details, the officer called his wife and claimed he was getting Jason Bateman’s autograph.

“And I signed it… ‘All my love, Jason Bateman,’” Fillion declared, as the crowd laughed and cheered. He also received nods of approval from his co-stars, including actor Richard T. Jones, who applauded him for his quick reaction to the situation.

Fans Had Interesting Reactions To The Story

Fillion’s mistaken identity story received fans’ approval, with some loving the Bateman reference. These supporters noted it wasn’t the first time the entertainer had been mistaken for “Horrible Bosses” star, recalling that the same thing happened in Fillion’s “Castle” series.

“I am watching the episode now of #Castle where he said he got out of a speeding ticket since they thought @jasonbateman,” a fan wrote. Other fans believed the duo looked similar, with someone describing Bateman and Fillion as comedy twins.

“I love this. When I worked with Nathan, when we were both in university, I used to call him the Jason Bateman lookalike… that was well over 35 years ago,” someone claimed. On the other hand, some fans argued that the two actors were far from similar, with an IG user declaring that Fillion was more handsome than Bateman.

The TV Personality Doesn’t Want The Hollywood Life

Fillion getting mistaken for Bateman might stem from his low-key celebrity life. In 2014, NEWS reported that the actor opened up about enjoying a different career compared to his peers. He noted he could do what he loved without the baggage that came with acting.

“I was talking to a friend the other day who described my level of success as ‘perfect famous’,” Fillion said. He stated that he could have dinner with friends at restaurants without worrying about the paparazzi tailing him.

He credited his simple life to the long hours he spent on set, claiming he had no time to get into trouble. At the time of the interview, Fillion was starring as mystery novelist Richard Castle on the hit series, “Castle,” alongside Stana Katic as Detective Kate Beckett.

The People’s Choice Award Honoree Loves Playing A Cop

Fillion may not want the attention that comes with fame, but that hasn’t stopped him from stealing hearts with his role on “The Rookie.” His portrayal of Officer John Nolan made him a fan favorite, but he equally enjoyed bringing the character to life.

In a March 2025 interview with “Good Morning America,” the TV personality raved about his love for the police drama series. “God, I’m having a lot of fun. I’ll tell you, 31 years in the business, this is probably the best job I’ve ever had,” he declared, per ABC News.

He echoed similar sentiments later that year while speaking to PEOPLE, saying he saw himself wrapping up the show over the next 10 years and passing the torch to someone else. However, he planned on “dabbling in the four to seven ‘Rookie’ spin-off series.”

Nathan Fillion Doesn’t Perform His Own Stunts

After portraying different heroic characters in action-packed shows like the police drama series, many may think Fillion has the skills to pull off the stunts displayed in these projects. Hello Magazine recently reported that he could not pull off his own stunts due to a knee injury.

The entertainer confirmed the news at the recent San Diego Comic Con, confessing that he wanted to do his own stunts like Tom Cruise. Unfortunately, he could not because “32-year-old Nathan got kicked in the knee on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’”

“It’s never been the same,” the actor added, but he soon realized there was nothing bad about being unable to do his own stunts. In 2010, he explained that movies had stunt doubles for a reason: they were paid for the stunts they performed, and he didn’t want to interfere with their paychecks.
