The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) has unveiled a new documentary initiative for YouTube.

Set to launch on May 7, the On Filme project will focus on timely social and political issues. To produce the documentaries, NFB has tapped Quebec media personalities Mounir Kaddouri (a.k.a. Maire de Laval), Anne-Lovely Etienne and Simon Coutu to share their perspectives on a contemporary issue of their choice.

The NFB didn’t confirm the exact subjects of each series yet, but it did note that the films will come in four formats that make up a single YouTube work:

    • A concise summary of the filmmaker’s intention (about two minutes)
    • A documentary film expressing a variety of viewpoints (about 35 minutes)
    • Video podcasts featuring discussions on the topic (about 45 minutes)
    • A video featuring commentary from someone directly impacted by the subject (about seven minutes)

The videos will be in French with English subtitles, and the first will hail from Kaddouri.

On Filme will first be available on the NFB’s YouTube channel before coming to the organization’s website and apps at a later date.
