Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe Joins Alfonso Cuarón’s “Ascension”

Caitriona Balfe, best known for playing the female lead Claire on Starz’s drama series Outlander, is joining Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón‘s new Apple TV series “Ascension”. The series is inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days. 

Ascension is a one-hour psychological thriller that follows Rose (Balfe), a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother. Rose is described as “brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own”. When she begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings – until she discovers something far more insidious beneath.

This is the first television series Balfe will appear in following the finale of Outlander, which ran for eight seasons, in May 2026. She will also be seen in the upcoming films: Sense & Sensibility, A Long Winter, and The Housekeeper. Balfe will also be appearing in Apple TV’s upcoming film Tenzing.

Cuarón executive produces via his Esperanto Filmoj alongside the company’s Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz as well as Carlos Cuarón. Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden executive produce for Anonymous Content. James and White also serve as executive producers.

Ascension marks Cuarón and Anonymous Content’s follow-up to the Apple TV limited series Disclaimer, which received Emmy, Golden Globes, SAG and Critics Choice Award nominations for stars Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline.
