Chelsea boosted their hopes of European qualification with a dramatic 2-1 win over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, while Spurs were left facing a nervous final day in the Premier League survival race.
Enzo Fernandez gave the hosts the lead midway through the first half before Andrey Santos doubled Chelsea’s advantage after the break.
Richarlison pulled one back late on to set up a tense finish, but Tottenham were unable to find an equaliser despite heavy stoppage time pressure.
Spurs actually made the brighter start and almost stunned Stamford Bridge inside the opening 15 minutes.
Mathys Tel struck the post with a diving header after Pedro Porro’s inviting cross picked him out at the back post, before Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was nearly punished by a defensive mix-up moments later.
Chelsea gradually settled and Cole Palmer forced Antonin Kinsky into a sharp save with a curling effort from the edge of the box.
The breakthrough arrived in the 18th minute when Pedro Neto drifted inside from the right and rolled the ball into Fernandez, who took one touch before rifling a superb strike beyond Kinsky from outside the area.
The goal transformed the atmosphere and Chelsea nearly doubled their advantage soon after. Fernandez clipped the post directly from a free-kick, while Palmer dragged another effort narrowly wide before half-time after a mistake from Joao Palhinha.
Tottenham struggled to create meaningful openings in the opening period and went into the interval without a shot on target.
Chelsea continued to control proceedings after the restart, although Richarlison finally tested Sanchez with a header from a corner just before the hour mark. Spurs briefly threatened to build momentum, but the hosts delivered what looked like the decisive blow in the 67th minute.
A slick passing move involving Palmer and Neto ended with Fernandez cushioning the ball into the path of Andrey Santos, who calmly swept home his first Premier League goal to make it 2-0.
Tottenham refused to collapse completely and pulled themselves back into the contest with 16 minutes remaining. Pape Sarr flicked on a cross inside the penalty area and Richarlison arrived unmarked at the far post to convert from close range.
That sparked a frantic finale. James Maddison saw a goal-bound effort brilliantly blocked by Jorrel Hato, while Sanchez comfortably gathered Tel’s low delivery deep into stoppage time.
