Aston Villa booked their place in the Europa League final with a 4-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest at Villa Park, overturning the first-leg deficit to reach their first major European final since 1982.
Forest started brightly and almost stunned the hosts early on when Omari Hutchinson curled narrowly wide after just nine minutes, but Villa gradually took complete control.
Emiliano Buendia was at the heart of everything dangerous, testing the goalkeeper before producing the breakthrough in the 36th minute. After slick combination play involving Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins, Buendia danced through challenges from Forest defenders and squared perfectly for Watkins to tap home from close range, levelling the aggregate score at 1-1.
Villa continued to dominate after the interval. John McGinn and Buendia both went close before the key moment arrived just before the hour mark.
Following a VAR review, Villa were awarded a penalty after a shirt pull on Pau Torres inside the area. Buendia stepped up and curled his spot-kick into the bottom corner to give the hosts the aggregate lead.
Forest struggled to respond despite brief moments of threat. Chris Wood was denied one-on-one by Emiliano Martinez, while Elliot Anderson dragged a promising effort wide as the visitors chased a way back into the tie.
Any hopes of a comeback disappeared in a devastating three-minute spell from Villa captain McGinn. In the 77th minute, Watkins cleverly teed him up on the edge of the box and the Scot rifled a first-time finish into the far corner to make it 3-0 on the night.
Just 156 seconds later, McGinn struck again, calmly guiding another first-time finish into the bottom corner after excellent work from Morgan Rogers to complete a memorable brace and seal Villa’s place in Istanbul.
The final stages became a celebration inside Villa Park as Unai Emery guided Aston Villa to a first European final of his tenure, continuing his outstanding record in continental competition.
Forest, despite an impressive European run and strong domestic recovery under Vitor Pereira, were ultimately overwhelmed by the stronger side.
