Viewers have recently seen a number of figures make their departure from 60 Minutes. Recently, news had also come out that Scott Pelley has been fired from the news program. Since then, he’s gotten an invitation to join another network, complete with another prominent journalist speaking out on his behalf.
Scott Pelley First Joined 60 Minutes In 2004, Having Also Worked For 60 Minutes II
Pelley started his career with CBS in 1989. He served as CBS News’ Chief White House Correspondent from 1997 to 1999.
One of Pelley’s most famous roles was as a correspondent for 60 Minutes. He joined the series in 2004, having originally been part of the spin-off, 60 Minutes II, starting in 1999. He also served as an anchor for a period on CBS Evening News.
On June 2, it was announced that Pelley was fired by the network. This followed his criticizing CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss and the recently installed 60 Minutes executive producer Nick Bilton.
Since then, another figure in broadcast journalism has spoken out about the situation, complete with an invitation. This was Rachel Maddow, who hosts her namesake show, The Rachel Maddow Show, on MS NOW, formerly MSNBC.
During her latest TV appearance, Maddow shared that she hopes Pelley will land “right here” on MS Now during the network’s special election coverage. She also shared, “There’s nobody who is more acutely attuned to the value of a free press than those who are trying to take it away.”
Pelley Is Just One Of Multiple Figures Who Have Recently Departed From 60 Minutes
In light of Pelley’s recent firing, Maddow took note of the ongoing shakeup at CBS News, with many figures coming and going since the installation of Weiss. She continued, “There’s nothing else going on at CBS News other than what we can see is happening at CBS News. And I don’t know where Scott Pelley will land. Frankly, I hope he lands right here.”
Maddow noted that she hoped Pelley would stay on broadcast television. She noted, “I hope he’s on TV tomorrow.” Ultimately, she expressed hope for other people in her line of work. She expressed, “I hope that everybody in journalism and everybody who values a free press figures out ways to outmaneuver the people who are trying to take the free press from us.”
Notably, Pelley isn’t the only figure to make their exit from 60 Minutes over recent months. In addition to Anderson Cooper announcing his exit earlier this year, other figures who were recently let go also include correspondents Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi, as well as executive producer Tanya Simon.
