Sheinelle Jones Shares Update On Grief One Year After Husband’s Death
Sheinelle Jones met her future husband, Uche Ojeh, while she was in college. They both attended Northwestern University in Illinois. They tied the knot in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 2007. The morning host recently discovered her long-lost wedding dress while packing up to move.
Sadly, their marriage didn’t last as long as they planned. He was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer, in 2023. Sheinelle Jones took a leave of absence from the Today Show in 2024 due to his illness. He passed away in May 2025 at the age of 45.
She spoke with Anderson Cooper on his podcast ahead of the first anniversary of her husband’s death. Sheinelle Jones admitted that she’s still struggling with the loss, referring to herself as a “walking ball of grief.”

Caring for a loved one during an illness can be stressful for everyone involved. Despite the best of intentions, disagreements are inevitable. Sheinelle Jones and her husband had one final argument about life after his passing.
According to Sheinelle Jones, she encouraged her ill husband to write letters to young kids while he was still alive. The couple shares three children – Kayin (16) and fraternal twins Clara and Uche Jr. (13). However, he was reluctant to do so, and it led to their final disagreement.
“It was the only time things got a little… because if I say, hey, I think you should write something for the kids, that means that I think you’re not gonna make it,” Sheinelle Jones told Anderson Cooper. She added, “I think for him to write it would have been accepting that, maybe, it wasn’t going to go that way, his way, and I don’t think he was willing to do that.”
She said her husband eventually agreed with the idea, but by then, the cancer had progressed, and it was too late. It made her reflect on her own mortality. “What I’ve realized is that tomorrow is not promised, and I think because my life has been turned upside down and they’ve already lost a parent, it made me question, ‘What would I want to leave on this planet? And what do I want to leave for my kids?’”
Sheinelle Jones and her kids will always mourn Uche Ojeh, but the loss is especially difficult on the anniversary of his death.
