The three-match One Day International (ODI) series between England and India reached a dramatic crescendo at Lord’s, London, on July 19, 2026. With the series locked at 1–1, both sides clashed in a high-stakes series decider. Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Harry Brook’s England posted a formidable total of 387/3. Despite a spirited chase anchored by senior masterclass performances, India finished on 360/7, falling short by 27 runs and conceding the series 2–1 to the hosts.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, India captain Shubman Gill identified the closing overs of England’s batting innings as the primary catalyst behind the outcome. Gill highlighted that India remained competitive for most of the contest, but an expensive death-overs spell severely tilted momentum toward the hosts.

“We were right in the game until the 45th over. Gave away a lot of runs in the last three overs. That’s where the game went away from us,” Gill stated, pinpointing the defensive lapses in the final stretch.

He explained and added India’s chase tactical framework, emphasizing the need to keep wickets intact while remaining within touching distance of the steep target: “We thought if we had wickets in hand after 40 overs, we would be in the game. At the same time, we didn’t want to be too far behind. After the powerplay we tried to play at 6-6.5 runs per over and chase at 10 in the last 10 overs.”

Despite the result, Gill praised Rohit Sharma’s sublime century. He noted how the veteran opener handled the surface as it turned progressively slower: “Pleased with how Rohit batted today. The wicket got slow in the end, wasn’t easy to bat, but treat to watch.”

Reflecting on overall bowling efforts, Gill admitted that failing to restrict England early set an uphill task: “In this match particularly, we didn’t bowl well in the first powerplay. The way they capitalised never gave us chance to come back. At the death, they got too far away from us.”

Conversely, England captain Brook lauded his squad’s determination: “Extremely proud. Fought hard, communicated well and manage to escape away with a series win over the world No. 1.” Brook revealed that strategic counsel from head coach Brendon McCullum prompted him to trust Jacob Bethell for an extended bowling stint, a move that yielded crucial breakthroughs during middle overs.

England’s innings was underpinned by a dominant 192-run opening stand between Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell. Duckett compiled a brilliant 141 off 135 balls, featuring 18 fours and a six, while Bethell struck a fluent 91 off 93 balls. Joe Root provided stability with an unbeaten 74 off 48 deliveries, before a explosive late cameo by Jos Buttler (41* off 13 balls at a strike rate of 315.38) propelled England to 387/3. India’s bowling attack suffered under the onslaught, with Gurnoor Brar conceding 97 runs in his 10 overs, while Prasidh Krishna claimed 2 wickets for 69 runs.

In response, India mounted a valiant run chase. Openers Rohit and Shubman Gill established a solid platform, adding 147 runs for the first wicket. Gill made 77 off 84 balls before being trapped LBW by Adil Rashid. Rohit went on to smash 138 off 110 balls (17 fours, 5 sixes), becoming the first Indian player to register an ODI century at Lord’s.

Virat Kohli contributed a brisk 74 off 60 balls to keep India in contention. However, Sam Curran turned the game decisively with a crucial four-wicket haul (4/75), dismissing key batters including Kohli, Ishan Kishan (14), Shreyas Iyer (0), and Axar Patel (2). India ultimately finished on 360/7 after 50 overs, falling 27 runs short of the target as England sealed the series victory.
