Team India are putting the finishing touches to their preparations for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with the opening game scheduled to begin on August 15. The Shubman Gill-led side will be entering the series with plenty of expectations, particularly given the challenge of adapting to Sri Lanka’s conditions.

India recently completed a three-day warm-up fixture against Sri Lanka Cricket XI, securing a win and giving the management valuable clues about the combination they could use in the first Test. However, injuries to several important players have complicated the selection picture, with one of the key debates now centred around the No. 6 position.

India face selection challenges after multiple absences

India’s preparations have not been entirely smooth, with injuries forcing changes to the squad before the Test series gets underway. Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out earlier, while Sai Sudharsan has now also been forced to miss the tour. The BCCI confirmed that Sudharsan, who has been recovering from a toe injury, would not be available for the two Tests against Sri Lanka. Sarfaraz Khan was subsequently added to the squad as his replacement.

The selectors have also brought in Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi following Bumrah’s absence, giving the youngster his maiden Test call-up. The changes underline how quickly India’s plans have had to evolve ahead of the series.

Despite the disruptions, the warm-up game provided the Indian camp with an opportunity to assess players in conditions similar to those they will encounter in the Tests. The match also allowed the management to examine different combinations before settling on the final XI. One of the most interesting calls could come in the middle order, where Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz are competing for a spot.

Mohammad Kaif picks ideal player for No. 6 spot in India’s playing XI

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes Sarfaraz should get the nod ahead of Jurel if India want to field what he considers their strongest possible XI for the first Test. Kaif acknowledged that the team management could lean towards Jurel because of his previous involvement with the Test side. However, he believes Sarfaraz’s batting qualities make him a more suitable option, particularly against spin.

“If they follow the trend of backing the players who have already been playing for the team, then they might say, ‘Jurel has been with us already. He hasn’t scored consistently, but we will back him because he has already been part of the team.’ If that is the approach, then Sarfaraz will have to wait,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

“But if you ask me what the best XI is, Sarfaraz’s name comes into my best XI because of his ability to play spin at No. 5 or No. 6. His record against spin is excellent,” he added.

The former India cricketer’s argument is particularly relevant considering the nature of the conditions expected in Sri Lanka. Against a strong spin attack, India could benefit from having a batter comfortable with attacking and rotating the strike against slower bowlers. Kaif also pointed towards Sarfaraz’s extensive range of shots as another reason why he would prefer the Mumbai batter in the playing XI. He further highlighted Sarfaraz’s ability to manipulate the field rather than simply relying on conventional attacking strokes.

“He also has a wide range of shots. When you get to the fourth or fifth day, batting becomes more difficult, and that is where a player like Sarfaraz Khan can be very useful. Players like him are very good at playing the field. He knows how to use sweeps and reverse sweeps effectively. He can hit over extra cover, he is good off the back foot and he attacks spin,” explained Kaif.

With Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul already available as wicketkeeping options, India do not necessarily have to select Jurel for his keeping ability. That potentially leaves the door open for Sarfaraz to be considered purely for his batting.
