Stephen Colbert’s time on The Late Show is coming to an end next month. In the meantime, Colbert recently announced that he will be hosting one special guest: Barack Obama, the 44th president. Notably, Colbert has hosted Obama many times over the years, even before joining The Late Show.
Barack Obama Will Appear On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert In Early May
Colbert first took over on The Late Show in 2015. He had been announced as the new host the previous year, taking over for David Letterman.
However, CBS has since announced that the show will be coming to an end, as the network plans to retire the Late Show format. The series finale is currently set to air on May 21, 2026.
As Colbert’s show comes to an end, he has been sharing a few of his final guests. Notably, it’s been announced that Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, is set to make his final appearance on the show.
Colbert himself shared the news on this past Thursday’s show, sharing that he will sit down with Obama at the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. This will be ahead of the venue’s grand opening on June 19.
During the episode airing April 23, Colbert shared, “Folks, before we get started, I have a quick but exciting announcement. Tuesday, May 5, here on The Late Show in his first interview from the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, I will be sitting down with former President Barack Obama.”
Colbert Also Hosted Obama A Few Times On The Colbert Report
For its part, the official Obama Foundation commented on a clip of the announcement on Instagram. At the time, it wrote, “Couch booked. Volume up. Ready to go.”
As fans know, Colbert has hosted Obama quite a few times already, even before joining The Late Show. As noted by TV Insider, this included three times on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report.

Colbert has also since hosted Obama twice on The Late Show. This was in 2016, months before the end of his presidency. He later returned in 2020 ahead of the Biden-Harris administration taking office. Back in 2024, Colbert also hosted the presidential fundraiser for Joe Biden with Obama, as well as former president Bill Clinton as Radio City Music Hall.
As the outlet noted, the Barack Obama Presidential Center started construction in 2021. A star-studded dedication ceremony is set to take place before its June 19 opening. The center is located in Jackson Park in Chicago and will feature a museum, library, community and conference facilities.
