Stephen Colbert has vowed to remain a vocal part of the national dialogue even as his time behind the late-night talk show desk draws to a close.

The veteran comedian shared that he intends to keep caring deeply about his country and its political future after his longtime television home wraps up production.

This perspective comes as the host prepares to say goodbye to his current broadcast role after more than a decade on the air.

Colbert is opening up about his incredible eleven-season run at the helm of his beloved CBS program, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” as he heads into his absolute final week on television.

In a featured cover story for PEOPLE Magazine, the 62-year-old television staple detailed his feelings about the conclusion of his network series, revealing exactly how he discovered it was being canceled.

Looking back at the overarching trajectory of his highly successful career, he candidly characterized the entire high-profile experience as a beautiful and completely happy accident.

When he was originally offered his current network hosting gig, he felt incredibly hesitant because he had never actually performed as himself on stage before. However, the host is also making it clear that leaving the airwaves will not erase his core passions, stating, “I’ll never stop caring about my country.”

He added, “I’m a perfectly fine fan of me, but I am not of the opinion that if my voice is missing from the national conversation, the republic will turn away.”

With the final episode officially scheduled to air on Thursday, May 21, the host expressed a simple, heartfelt wish for his massive audience, stating that he truly hopes the production managed to make their final days just a little bit better.

The looming conclusion of his late-night journey has also brought up surprising behind-the-scenes details about how Colbert first learned his program was ending.

According to The Blast, the comedian revealed that his show’s cancellation came completely without warning, catching him entirely off guard. Rather than a formal meeting with network executives, Colbert found out face-to-face through his manager, James “Babydoll” Dixon, whose unexpected presence immediately signaled that something was wrong.

The news was particularly jarring because Colbert had signed a highly lucrative contract less than two years prior, recalling that network officials had been extremely eager to secure his future with the company.

While Colbert chose not to litigate the business decision or argue with network ownership, he noted that the timing felt strange given that late-night television had been a highly profitable broadcast model for seventy years.

The corporate decision that surprised Colbert eventually sparked fierce public backlash from one of the biggest names in television history. Late-night legend Letterman made a fiery return to the Ed Sullivan Theater to stand in solidarity with Colbert as the series nears its final days.

The 79-year-old icon, who originally founded the franchise over three decades ago, openly criticized CBS leadership following the network’s 2025 announcement that the show would end for financial reasons under Skydance Media’s acquisition of Paramount.

Joining the 62-year-old host, Letterman aired his deep frustrations over the cancellation, jokingly stating, “I have every right to be p-ssed off, so I’ll be p-ssed off here a little bit.”

He reminded the crowd that he rebuilt the theater and paved the way for Colbert, emphasizing that a network cannot silence a person’s voice, per The Blast.

Amid the looming conclusion of his show, Colbert is successfully redirecting his creative focus toward a massive Hollywood film franchise. The seasoned entertainer is entering the world of blockbuster cinema by co-writing an upcoming installment of a beloved fantasy series alongside a member of his immediate family.

The Blast previously confirmed that the 62-year-old comedian has lined up a surprising new project by joining the creative team behind the legendary “The Lord of the Rings” franchise.

The late-night host is co-writing the fresh installment alongside his screenwriter son, Peter McGee, and veteran franchise scriptwriter Philippa Boyens. As an avid enthusiast of the original J.R.R. Tolkien books, Colbert revealed that he kept revisiting specific early chapters from “The Fellowship of the Ring” that never made it into Jackson’s iconic film trilogy.

The newly announced cinematic venture stands in stark contrast to the negative reactions coming from Colbert’s media critics as his final television broadcast approaches.

Media personality Megyn Kelly expressed absolutely no sympathy for the veteran comedian on a recent episode of her podcast, “The Megyn Kelly Show,” as reported by The Blast.

Kelly specifically targeted the rooftop segment featuring Colbert and Letterman, characterizing their destructive display on top of the network headquarters as a humiliating temper tantrum.

She criticized the duo for publicly airing their anger over the show ending, stating, “Cry me a river, would you take it like a man?” Kelly then concluded her harsh review by calling the entire situation incredibly embarrassing.
