Ahead of her debut album, Be Sweet To Me, out later this month, Violet Grohl stopped by the latest episode of AltPress: In Session.
Long before she began releasing music of her own, Grohl was obsessed with sound and songwriting. Her earliest musical fixation was the Beatles, whose melodies and harmonies sparked a lifelong connection to music.
That passion eventually led her toward more emotionally raw and experimental artists, from Jeff Buckley’s haunting vocal performances to the scrappy, alternative edge of the Breeders and Pixies. Those formative influences — especially the dynamics and textures of the ’90s alt-rock era — have deeply informed the direction of her new material.

Before Be Sweet To Me, Grohl connected with Editor-in-Chief Anna Zanes for a wide-ranging conversation about finding her voice as an artist. She reflected on growing up surrounded by music, discovering the records that shaped her identity, and embracing the darker, dreamlike atmosphere that inspires her creatively.
She also detailed connecting with producer Justin Raisen after hearing Kim Gordon’s recent album, which Raisen worked on. What began as admiration for the production quickly turned into a creative partnership, strengthened by their mutual love of David Lynch, who she paid tribute to on “What’s Heaven Without You,” and his surrealist world-building.
