Even as the legendary batter refines his focus strictly to the One-Day International (ODI) format, his aura remains a primary talking point across the cricketing fraternity. Recently, former Indian head coach and veteran commentator Ravi Shastri sent waves through the sports world by drawing a striking parallel between Kohli and one of the most imposing figures in cricket history. Shastri’s insights provide a profound look into the psychological makeup of India’s modern maestro, arriving at a time when fans are processing an unexpected setback regarding Kohli’s immediate playing schedule.

    Speaking on the ONE8 YouTube channel, Shastri opened up about the distinct identity Kohli brings to the 22 yards. Rather than comparing him to his contemporaries, Shastri looked back at the golden era of Caribbean cricket to find an apt match for Kohli’s fierce demeanor.

    “When I see Virat Kohli, I think of Viv Richards, because he had that kind of intensity on the field, when he was leading, when he was a player, he was always in the face to opposition, he’s everywhere in the field. Virat is very similar to him,” Shastri revealed.

    Sir Vivian Richards ruled world cricket not just with his willow, but with an unmatched, swagger-laden intimidation that could break an opposition’s resolve before a ball was bowled. Shastri, who witnessed Richards’ prime firsthand, notes that Kohli possesses that exact brand of raw, unfiltered competitive energy. Whether it is celebrating a rival’s wicket with absolute passion or staring down a fast bowler, Kohli’s refusal to back down echoes the legendary Antiguan. This visceral, “in-your-face” philosophy defined Kohli’s highly successful captaincy era and continues to dictate his presence as a senior player on the pitch.

    While Shastri’s high praise underscores Kohli’s irreplaceable value to the team dynamics, the Men in Blue will have to navigate their next assignment without their star anchor. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Kohli has been sidelined for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan due to a hamstring injury.

    The injury was sustained during the high-stakes Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 final, where Kohli successfully anchored Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a magnificent title victory. The dynamic top-order batter top-scored with a brilliant unbeaten 75 in the final, but the physical toll of a gruelling season culminated in a distal semimembranosus tendon tear in his hamstring.

    With Kohli ruled out, India’s selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has named young left-handed sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal as his replacement for the series. While Team India re-welcomes Rohit Sharma back to leadership duties, the absence of Kohli’s anchoring capability in the middle overs leaves a massive void. The medical team at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) is monitoring his rehabilitation closely, hoping the master chaser can recover in time for the upcoming high-profile ODI tour against England.
