The Rockies have the worst record in the majors and haven’t been good in years. They are in clear sell position. What’s not clear is how they will approach the deadline, as they have a new front office in place.
The previous front office was notorious for not trading away players at peak value, or even when they still had a sliver of value. In 2021, both Trevor Story and Jon Gray were free agents. Despite being clear sellers, the Rockies didn’t trade either. Story rejected a qualifying offer at season’s end, netting the Rockies an extra draft pick in 2022, which they used to select Sterlin Thompson. Gray did not receive a QO and departed for nothing. C.J. Cron had signed a minor league deal with the club prior to that campaign. He went on to have a 28-homer season. The Rockies gave him a two-year extension instead of trading him. The first season of that deal worked fine enough but not the second. Daniel Bard had a renaissance season in 2022, at the age of 37. Instead of trading him, the Rockies extended him, a move that quickly backfired.
There have been some changes since then. The Rockies traded Ryan McMahon and Jake Bird at last year’s deadline, even though McMahon’s contract ran through 2027 and Bird had three-plus years of club control remaining. The club then moved on from general manager Bill Schmidt at the end of the season. Paul DePodesta was hired as president of baseball operations. DePodesta has a more analytical reputation than the previous regime, but we’ve yet to see how he’ll run a trade deadline for the Rox.
