The Wonder Man star had been cast as Praetorian Jack, an ally to young Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Abdul-Mateen II revealed the decision came down to burnout after years of back-to-back work with little downtime, since graduating drama school in 2015. He rapidly built an impressive résumé across film and television, appearing in projects such as Aquaman, Watchmen, Us, Candyman, The Matrix Resurrections and Black Mirror, often moving straight from one production to the next.
He said: “I won’t call them champagne problems, but these are gifts, these are blessings the entire way.”
Described as being “on top of it”, director George Miller had begun creative discussions with actors long before filming. Abdul-Mateen II appreciated the process, but couldn’t commit to what the project required.
Abdul-Mateen II said, “It wasn’t overwhelming. It was so cool. It was actually so cool because he loved it. And it was like the only thing that he cared about, and he made the time in his life to do that, and he had his actors involved in the process a year ahead, just having creative and imaginative conversations, and I knew deep down inside that it was too much and that I needed to rest.”
Instead of pushing through, the actor made the decision to step away, allowing Tom Burke to take over while he took time to reset.
Since then, Abdul-Mateen II has returned to screens refreshed, leading Marvel’s Wonder Man series and continuing to line up major projects, including The Adventures of Cliff Booth.
Wonder Man and Man on Fire are now streaming on Disney+ and Netflix, respectively.
