06/07/2026 – The two-time Palme d’Or winner will chronicle the life of the designer in a feature produced by Andrea Iervolino, although the Armani Group has publicly distanced itself from the project

Two-time Palme d’Or-winning Danish filmmaker Bille August is set to direct Armani: The King of Fashion, a feature biopic about the life and career of legendary Italian designer Giorgio Armani. The film is being produced by Italian producer Andrea Iervolino and will explore both the professional achievements and personal journey of one of the most influential figures in modern fashion.

According to the producers, the project will trace Armani’s evolution from his early years as a window dresser in Milan to the founder of a global luxury empire that redefined Italian elegance and forged an enduring relationship between fashion and cinema. Oscar-winning screenwriter Bobby Moresco (Crash) – a frequent collaborator of Iervolino and currently working on Maserati: The Brothers – has penned the screenplay.

Born in Piacenza in 1934, Armani began his career at Milan department store La Rinascente before training under celebrated menswear designer Nino Cerruti. In 1975, together with his partner, architect Sergio Galeotti, he founded the Giorgio Armani fashion house, building what would become one of the world’s most recognisable luxury brands. Throughout his career, Armani maintained close ties with the film industry, designing costumes for productions including American Gigolo, The Untouchables, Mission: Impossible and The Wolf of Wall Street. He died in Milan in September 2025 at the age of 91.

August is one of Europe’s most celebrated filmmakers, having won the Palme d’Or twice at Cannes for Pelle the Conqueror – which also earned the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film – and The Best Intentions (written by Ingmar Bergman). His extensive filmography also includes The House of the Spirits, Les Misérables, Smilla’s Sense of Snow, Night Train to Lisbon and A Fortunate Man. Most recently, the Danish director has completed the series The Count of Monte Cristo.

Commenting on the collaboration, Iervolino said: “There are directors who make great films, and there are directors who possess the rare ability to reveal the humanity behind greatness. Bille August belongs to that extraordinary category. His work is distinguished by elegance, emotional intelligence and a remarkable respect for the lives he portrays. Those qualities perfectly mirror Giorgio Armani‘s own values: refinement, authenticity, vision and timeless excellence.”

However, shortly after the project was announced, the Armani Group issued a statement distancing itself from the production. The company clarified that while it is aware of Armani: The King of Fashion, it “has never been involved in the initiative, nor has it authorised, supported, endorsed, or participated in its development or production.” It added that it considers itself “entirely unrelated to the project” and dissociates itself from both the film and its creators.

Armani: The King of Fashion is being produced by Andrea Iervolino through The Andrea Iervolino Company, whose recent credits include Michael Mann‘s Ferrari starring Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz and the forthcoming Maserati: The Brothers directed by Bobby Moresco and starring Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, Andy Garcia and Jessica Alba. Production details, including cast, filming dates and international sales, have yet to be released.
