The Canadian Football League has launched its first official season-long fantasy game.
Players can register on the league’s website to create or join a public or private league. Public leagues are filled with random users, while private leagues allow friends to compete together using an online code.
There are 22 icons available for each league and its respective teams. Leagues can either be four or six teams in size with customizations available for the trade deadline, playoff size, and time to make a draft selection.
Drafts must be scheduled at the time of the league’s creation, though it appears dates and times can be changed to suit all users. The draft order is randomly generated.
There are 13 roster spots for each team, including five bench positions. As such, drafts will be 13 rounds.
Starters will including one quarterback superflex, one running back, three receivers, one national flex position, one kicker, and a defence/special teams unit.
The quarterback superflex spot is primarily meant for quarterbacks, though it can also be filled with a running back or receiver in the case of bye weeks or injuries. The national flex position must be filled by a running back or receiver who is Canadian.
Once the draft is over, teams will be able to make roster changes through trades as well as the waiver wire.
“CFL fantasy … is the perfect way to dive deeper into fandom,” said CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston in a statement. “New fans can learn more about the league and their favourite players, while seasoned diehards can engage with our game like never before. Draft and build the perfect team and then each week, set your starting lineup and tune in to watch the action unfold!”
During last year’s Grey Cup in Winnipeg, Johnston announced what he termed a “historic commitment to modernize (the league’s) digital platforms,” including new league and team websites, a new smartphone app, and a season-long fantasy game.
Though the websites and app have yet to be unveiled, fantasy is now available to the public.
