Discord has rolled out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for voice and video calls for all users.
This means that users can communicate privately without anyone listening, including Discord. No opt-in is required.
The messaging platform began work on E2EE in August 2023 and brought it to some users the following year. The company says part of the challenge of making this functionality work across the platform is that it’s available on so many different kinds of devices, including mobile, PC and console. Beyond E2EE, Discord says it will “continue to strengthen privacy protections” on its platforms over time.
Discord’s wide rollout of E2EE comes just a couple of weeks after Meta announced plans to remove E2EE on Instagram. The company said “very few people” were opting into E2EE and noted that the feature remains available on its WhatsApp platform.
This also comes just a few months after Discord was met with intense backlash over its plans to roll out an age verification policy that would require facial or ID scans. The company acknowledged it had “missed the mark” and delayed the rollout to the second half of 2026 as it works to introduce more age verification options for users.
