Twins Red and Blue live alone in a retro-styled home with fully automated amenities, such as a magic fridge with unlimited supplies and a rubbish disposal in the basement that is triggered by saying “garbage” three times. Their only contact with the outside world is through the mysterious authority figure Papa, an unseen moral overseer and source of both comfort and fear.

The siblings fill their days watching endless rotations of the seemingly innocent puppet show “Barn” on old VHS tapes, delivered each day individually. The farm animals enact life choices and problems through simplistic interactions that amount to brainwashing through repetition.

To kill the boredom, the twins play long games of catch ball, trying to break their personal bests, and Blue, in particular, makes meticulous colourings from a book containing images of “Barn” characters. Their only excitement comes from an occasional special day called “Noel”, where wrapped presents manifest under a glimmering tree. One such “Noel”, a mute and emotionless humanoid, appears as a gift. Shocked and scared, Red and Blue run to Papa, who tells them this androgynous entity is their new Pal, and they must now care for the newcomer. When probed, Papa replies, ” because you are of that age now”.

Within such an insular dynamic, any small change is cataclysmic by nature, and one as large as Pal’s sudden addition proves exponentially disastrous. Everything the twins have ever known splinters into a kaleidoscope of revelations that push their limited lived experience to the brink of a terrifying epiphany. Fascinating and unsettling, this Canadian conundrum mesmerises with its immaculate production design, horror-movie minutiae, and puzzle-box plot. Colour-coded to perfection, its claustrophobic mantra parades relentless abstractions of isolation and conditioning until the viewer becomes immersed in its languid undertow.

Essentially a toxic microcosm of end-stage capitalism and the perils of surrendering control to gadgets, godheads and soulless influencers, the film is far deeper than its simplistic nature versus nurture framing suggests. Gender appropriation, fascist ideologies, and pseudo-theism simmer in the background, occasionally boiling over into the dystopian narrative.

With delicate yet incisive strokes, Home Bodies brushes the soil from the fossils of an autonomy long lost to greed, manipulation, and the soul-sapping quest for an easy life. It holds a mirror to our willingness to be distracted and spiritually shackled by false assurances instead of questioning the fucked-up agendas behind them.

The film suggests a form of human devolution is inevitable as our species raises a white flag to the raging onslaught of materialism and misinformation that flows from the subjugating screens and endless package deliveries that chaperone modern living. So many strands of satire and social commentary hang suspended in the amber of surrealism or drift into the arena of absurdism that the bulk of the movie is open to interpretation. Not least the ending, where the film jettisons its minimalist structure to give geometry to its tantalising silhouettes.

Casey Walker’s multi-layered parable is an impressive affair conducted in the most fragile alcoves of cinematic literacy. Utterly at the mercy of critical thinking and thematic acumen, it’s also a risky one. A compulsive fever dream stewing with intelligent perspectives on what human beings are and what they may indeed become.
