Hasbro Entertainment, Prime Video, and Kilter Films are reportedly teaming up to adapt the 1985-1988 animated series, Jem and The Holograms, for a live action series. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are signed on as executive producers.
Athena Wickham and Gabriel Mariano are also attached to the project.
The original Jem and the Holograms series was created by Christy Marx, as inspired by the launch of MTV and the subsequent rise of music videos as a credential part of the music industry and an artist’s public power and image. The show’s premise centred Jerrica Benton, a record store owner who also leads a rock band under the punk rock glamorous alter ego Jem. Jem and the Holograms‘ voice cast included Samantha Newark, Britts Phillips, Patricia Alice Albrecht, Kath Soucie, Marlene Aragon, and Susan Blu.
Additional voice credits include Neil Ross, Charlie Alder, Desirèe Goyette, Cathy Cavadini and Hazel Shermet.
2015 saw the series adapted for the big screen by director Jon M. Chu, working from a script penned by Ryan Landels. Aubrey Peeples took on the ritual role, featuring alongside Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko, Aurora Perrineau, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis. However, Chu’s adaptation proved to be unsuccessful, grossing $2.3 million from a budget of $5 million and sitting at a Rotten Tomatoes score of 22%.
“I get fans sending me hate mail, I get death threats, I get racist remarks — it’s a really fun business,” the director stated as shared in The Hollywood Reporter. “Reviewers have been harsh, to say it lightly.”
