The Phillies made a few front office promotions on Thursday afternoon. The most notable are bumps for Dan Aucoin and Luke Murton to assistant general manager roles. Aucion is an AGM of research/information, while Murton receives the new title of AGM of hitting.
Aucoin, who has a background with Driveline Baseball, began consulting for the Phillies at the beginning of the decade. He accepted a full-time position in 2023 and has spent four years in their analytics department. This formalizes his role as the team’s head of R&D, a title which had been vacant since the Nationals poached former AGM Anirudh Kilambi last offseason.
Murton has been the team’s director of player development, essentially overseeing the farm system. He’s in his fourth season with the organization and was initially hired as a director of hitting development. Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic reports that the Phils will hire a new farm director in the offseason after creating this new position for Murton.
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski leads the front office. Preston Mattingly received the bump to general manager over the 2024-25 offseason, locking him in as Dombrowski’s top lieutenant. Philadelphia now has five executives with an AGM title. Jorge Velandia, Ned Rice, and Brian Barber (AGM of amateur scouting) also have those roles.
Rice is also the organization’s vice president of business operations. The team announced today that he’ll assume more responsibilities on the business side while ceding some baseball duties to director of baseball ops Corinne Landrey and to Edwin Soto, who was promoted to manager of baseball administration. Rice will remain in charge of contract negotiations on the baseball side.
