Xbox testing disc-to-digital feature to digitize game collections

Although The Verge notes that Microsoft could follow Sony’s lead by removing physical disks from its Xbox consoles, the company is testing a way to ensure users can digitize their physical video game collections.

According to The Verge’s Tom Warren, Xbox employees recently started testing the new feature after references to “enable Disc2Digital” were spotted within the Xbox PC app’s code back in May. Microsoft’s disc-to-digital feature will reportedly work only with Xbox One and Series X/S discs, excluding Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs.

It is also noted that the feature will work with discs bundled with a console and with multi-disc titles, providing access to all features (downloadable content, etc.) that the game usually offers. Now, Warren also warns that some Xbox One discs may not work with the feature, noting that Microsoft told its testers it depends on “how and when” the disc was manufactured.

The good news is that the discs will still work after being digitized, and that you will only lose a digital entitlement if you loan or sell the disc to someone else.

As stated earlier, Microsoft is currently testing the feature internally, and more details will be shared in the near future. If Microsoft’s upcoming Project Helix console doesn’t come with a disc drive, this feature could be essential to fans digitizing their game collection on their systems.
