Polish filmmaker Andrzej Żuławski created what is now known as one of horror cinema’s freakiest and most emotionally unhinged classics. Years after its release, Possession could rarely be watched in a proper home video format. But now, the 1981 film is getting an American remake with Parker Finn as director and a whole new cast.
Just announced ahead of April’s final weekend, Margaret Qualley and Callum Turner have now been cast in the 2020s remake of a cult horror classic. Finn’s breakout film was Smile, and he followed it with Smile 2. He will be writing, directing and producing the Possession remake with Paramount Pictures.
No longer attached to star in the film, as he was originally, Robert Pattinson will instead assist in producing the film through Icki Eneo Arlo.
In the original French and German production, Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill starred as the disintegrating married couple. Set in West Berlin, their request for a divorce leads them towards infidelity, obsession, psychosis, political dread, and something still even more strange. With its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Adjani won Best Actress for her performance, which has continued to grow in reputation over the decades following the film’s release. Her performance is noted as a full-body collapse. It is something that seems impossible to replicate without making a fool of oneself. Part of the problem and part of the fascination of the role.
While promoting Smile 2 last year, he is quoted as saying that he will approach the film with “teeth and ferocity”. He emphasised that he wants to honour Żuławski’s original without ruining it.
No release date as of yet for the film.
