Universal Pictures has announced that it is swapping two major releases on its upcoming release calendar – The Mummy 4 and Miami Vice ’85, reports Variety, amongst others.
The Mummy project, directed by Radio Silence, has been moved to October 15th, 2027, from its original date of May 19th, 2028. It is a revival of the franchise that starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in 1999. Both are reprising their roles as Rick and Evie O’Connell, joined by fellow star John Hannah as Evie’s brother from the first three films.
It is not to be confused with the recent release with a similar name by Lee Cronin. At the moment, there is only an untitled Paramount film on the new date.
The other major date change belongs to Miami Vice ’85, which Joseph Kosinski will direct. The project has been moved from August 6th, 2027, to May 19th, 2028. It is due to star Michael B Jordan and Austin Butler as detectives Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett. This is due to Mummy 4 being further along than Vice ’85, which has only just secured its stars to deals for the film.
There are also rumours that Tom Cruise will be joining the project as the villain. It will be an adaptation of the iconic 1980s NBC series Miami Vice for Universal Pictures.
It appears that Universal is reserving the August 6th 2027 date for a different movie release. The studio has typically had great fortune with that weekend in August, with projects such as Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw opening there in 2019 to $60 million.
